BICKERING & BACKBITING

Flying Space Monkey bought himself a peck of trouble with his "Denigrating the Overblog" post. The idea was to have a vote for the most over-rated blogger:

Who's getting entirely too much traffic and doesn't deserve it? Got any nominations? Rules are the same as the one for underblogs except backwards...or...something like that.

As expected (by everyone except, apparently, FSM), this led to nasty bouts of sniping & name-calling in the comments. Monkey quickly posted about his chagrin:

I'm not a hateful person. I am not a hatemonger. I actually don't want put any body off the blog roll. The 'Denigrate the Overblog' was one of those kinds of ideas that wasn't obvious to me how it would turn out, but it should have been. Everybody putting people down. And I provided the forum for it!

How oblivious can I be?

So if you want to join in the bloodletting, then stop over to his comments and start swinging your nail-studded ax-handle around.

Me, I'm taking the scientific approach.

I believe that a fair amount of traffic is one hit for every link that you've been given, on the theory that if you link me, you should read me once per day, otherwise, why the hell did you link me?

It stands to reason, then, that if you're you're getting tons of traffic, but have very few links, then everyone's looking at you, but no one likes you enough to link, i.e. you're a circus freak.

Rather than do a comprehensive study of the phenomenon, I'm just going to look at the Bear's list of blog-rank by traffic, and see who's traffic ranking is insanely higher than their link ranking:

Gizmodo: by traffic - 3... by links - 121

The Smirking Chimp: by traffic - 7... by links - 297

Blog for America: by traffic - 9... by links - 180

Drudge Retort: by traffic - 11... by links - 2081

Filchyboy: by traffic - 17... by links - 6408

And Filchy's link doesn't even f****** work! Now THAT's being over-rated!

Now, as for rumors that Michele of A Small Victory is over-rated, I say bullshit. The girl is 14/14 so I think she's exactly where she belongs.

I'm such a dope. I have never even heard of these blogs, other than Michele and I like her stuff. Maybe I need to step out of the dark every once and awhile and see the light...

Harvey exemplified on July 15, 2004 09:16 PM

That's ok, I've never heard of them either. I was just running the numbers :-)

This kind of thing is like "blog rules"... there aren't any! Basically, if you like reading a blog, read it, if you don't, don't read it. Why do people have angst about it? (it's like having angst about someone getting "too many hits")

However, I give flying monkey points for finally figuring out that it wouldn't work anyway. Although things had to devolve into chaos before he got it... LOL - a lesson for him.

Seems an awful lot like a high school "clique" pissing contest to me....

What Teresa said.
Hey, I'm too tired to be witty.
But I did look at my stats and according to your rules I'm in the "my blog sucks" dept.
Oh well. I kind of knew that. But I am enjoying it so what the heck. I may as well just kick back, write what I want, and have fun.

Drudge Retort punches above its weight because it owns www.drudge.com and www.drudgeretort.com.

Both of them piggyback off of Drudge's success and have suckered me into becoming a traffic statistic more than once through mistyping.

Rachel Ann - Screw my rules. Your blog doesn't suck.

And even if it does, at least you've got class, which puts you above a lot of other folks who may technically "outrank" you

Brian - How the heck did Drudge NOT get Drudge.com? That one seriously puzzles me.

Patriot Paradox 209 visits/day (212)

That's not too bad, but ever since June I've been down on hits. I used to get well over 400. Does this mean I suck?

Harvey exemplified on July 16, 2004 10:09 PM

Nick - Like a Hoover shop vac :-)

Seriously, though, I'm not sure what happened. Did you do any major changes in June?

Nick Queen exemplified on July 17, 2004 09:31 PM

You don't remember my exile to Elba due to being way too popular and getting 16000 hits a day for a week? After my triumphant return hits sucked for about two weeks barely scratching 100, then I started heading back up. This is why i moved to Munuvia, since my host never responded.

I have no idea why Drudge.Com became available in 1998 when I registered it.

Although your conclusion is correct -- the Drudge Retort is a freak show -- I think the disparity between links and traffic occurs because the site wasn't particularly weblog-like until four months ago. People only began linking to it when the format was changed. I decided that if 10,000 to 40,000 people were going to visit every day regardless of what we published, they ought to have something to do when they got there.

Harvey exemplified on July 18, 2004 11:46 PM

Oh, I can just see the headline on Drudge Retort now:

"Drudge Retort labeled "freak show" by talentless right-wing hack blogger".

Oh well. Just spell my name right :-)

Flattered that you stopped by, Rogers, and I appreciate the explanation. :-)
