TAINTED HEROES

Via blogdaughter Boudicca of Boudicca's Voice, I found out that Bobby Fischer wants to renounce his American Citizenship.

I wish Bobby Fisher would hurry up and die before he irreparably taints his chess-playing legacy.

More so.

Yeah, I know he's a jag, but when I was just a high school chess geek, this man was someone I looked up to for his skills on the chess board. The only chess book I ever read cover-to-cover was "Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess", and it helped my play immeasurably.

During the Cold War, Bobby was a symbol and a legend. The Russians were unbeatable in chess. Period. Don't even think about it.

Fischer thought about it. Fischer won. America won. My heart soared to think of it.

In 1992, he came out of seclusion for a rematch with Spassky. He did it in Yugoslavia in violation of UN sanctions and under threat of penalty from the US Treasury Deparment. On camera, he spit on the order telling him not to play there. When I saw that, my inner Libertarian cheered.

Who the hell did the UN or any super-nannified governmental organization think they were, trying to tell a man where he could or couldn't play a game of chess?

I followed the games, and I cheered when he won.

But now... every time he opens his mouth, I cringe, and every stupid pronouncement from him just makes it harder and harder for me to defend him at all.

Now I know how OJ's fans from his football days feel.

So please die soon, Bobby, before I can't say anything nice about you at all.

It really is terrible some of the things he has said. He's a real whack job. He feels no sadness for 9/11; he thinks we deserved it.

I don't know. Sometimes I think people can be so smart they border on insane. Either way, doesn't give you an excuse to be such an ass. What a dork.

He probably is over the line - it's a tough line to walk.

He probably views people as chess pieces - to be manipulated towards one's goals. He would have no remorse over anything. People who strategize exclusively like he did have a different perspective.
About 15 years ago I decided to change my way of thinking from that to one that included using my heart chakra. It made a huge difference. I have friends now. If you'd talked with my family then, you'd be certain I was on my way to being a bad person. The difference is in how I changed my thinking and feeling.

He apparently didn't do that.

On a similar note, I remember a black boxer saying something like; "... Every time Leon Sphynx opens his mouth I'm afraid he's going to set the black race back 200 years! ..." I thought it was pretty funny - so did he. :)

Peop;e who never think with their heart are lonely. You can't tell someone that though. They have to figure it out for themselves.

It's very sad - I've often wondered if he was boardering on Autistic. Very smart, very good at what he does, but absolutely no idea of how other people feel nor does he care.

This is one reason why I try NOT to find out anything about people that I admire in a singular area. Usually once I find out what they are like outside of their specialty, I don't like them anymore and it taints the way I feel about whatever they do... *sigh*

...ill fitting underwear, I tell you it affects the mind.

BeeBee - ya think Fischer's got a pair of crawly tightie whities in his crack?

Hmmm... maybe he should switch to thongs.

Hmm, this Fischer thing makes me really want to check out that new book - "Bobby Fischer Goes to War"...maybe all this loopiness is the price of being a chess genius.
