Here's how I do it: Put the penny in, wait 60 seconds, pull the penny out. If it looks like this, then the coffee's ready.

Spoken like a true squid. On my oil-burning flattops, I figured if it'd hold a spoon upright, it was strong enough.

When Harvey and I made coffee, we used the "if the spoon melts, it's ready."

The coffee we used to make pretty much did our work for us.

I know Harvey got to add the special nuke additive, Devildog. Maybe you had the field-expedient tactical additive?
