GODWIN'S LAW IN ACTION

Godwin's Law: "As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one.

[snip]

There is a tradition in many newsgroups and other Internet discussion forums that once such a comparison is made, the thread is finished and whoever mentioned the Nazis has automatically "lost" whatever debate was in progress.
"

Bloggreatgranddaughter KD of Life of the Wife mentioned that she's been hit repeatedly with this line:

I am often told that as I grow older and more educated, I will grow more liberal.

Which put me in mind of this quote, usually attributed to Winston Churchill:

"If you're not a liberal when you're 25, you have no heart. If you're not a conservative by the time you're 35, you have no brain."

While I was Googling to check the phrasing on this, I came across a discussion thread about the quote, and as I was reading it, I kept waiting for the Nazi analogy.

I wasn't disappointed.

Godwin 1, liberal asshat 0.

I was lucky. I passed the Liberal stage before I was old enough to vote, so I have no regrets about anyone I helped put into office.

And I've always thought that it took more true compassion and empathy to be conservative than liberal. It's the difference between putting a bandaid on a serious wound (liberal) and using stitches to properly close it (conservative). Sure, the stitches seem like more pain in the short term. But in the long term, it's a much healthier solution.

"long term"?

Now, now... let's not go around using words that liberals won't understand :-)
